There are those who absolutely thrive on doing everything on their own, and if you’re one of them, here’s some good news for you!
There are literally tons of reputable guitar forums and sites that provide the equivalent of hours of practice and learning material … absolutely free of charge.
Not many things in life are better than that, wouldn’t you say?
Anyway, this is a list of free sources for online guitar lessons I’ve compiled from my hours of surfing the internet. Do check back once in a while, as I foresee this list will get longer. The list will also be periodically re-sequenced, with the more effective and "better" lessons listed nearer the top.
If you know of other great sites for the learner-guitarist, I’ll appreciate it very much if you could post a comment and point to those sites.
Here then is the list:
- Guitarprinciples.com – I was so happy to find the notes to the intro of Guns and Roses Sweet Child of Mine here!
- Wholenote.com – The best and most varied source for guitar lessons bar none. Take your pick from free, searchable and interactive lessons on all playing styles imaginable … they’ve got Classical, Blues, Jazz (my favourite!), plus sections for Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced players.
- GuitarCamera.com has chord charts and tablature for many songs, such as Hotel California, Every Breath You Take, etc. The videos are not free, but you can learn a lot from the other material. Head over there now, and scroll down 1 page for a list of songs they have chords for.
- Chords / Tablature with Lyrics:
- Murphy PJ’s Guitar Chords and Lyrics, from The Beatles to Christmas songs.
- The Guitar Resource – a relatively new blog (started in March 2007) on guitar theory and techniques, but packed with tones of useful information and videos.
