When it comes to guitar product reviews, I tend to only trust those posted by actual users of the product.
When I was researching the LMG course and trying to reach a decision on whether to buy it or not (Update: I decided to get the course in the end, and have written a full review), it was pretty difficult to find user reviews of the Learn and Master Guitar with Steve Krenz training course – these were hard to come by simply because it’s not a mass-marketed kit, nor one of the multitude of guitar books available on Amazon.com.
Despite the difficulty, I’m glad to have been able to discover some gems on various guitar forums, and I’d like to share with you some of them below.
The Learn and Master Guitar Member Forum Archives
L&MG’s decision to have a members forum is a nice touch. The posts pre-dating January 11th, 2007 can be found here, while those after that date are visible only to customers who have purchased the package.
I think there’s no better indication of L&MG customer satisfaction than the discussions in this forum. Browsing randomly through the posts, I see that the students are generally very satisfied with the course.
Steve also seems to take an active part in discussions. Not only does he seem to know his stuff, but is generous with his help too.
I’d like to list and summarize some of the more interesting user opinion, reviews and posts below. Some of them are taken from the current members-only section, so there’ll be no active link to those.
Is Steve the real deal? Or a scam artist?
I have no doubt that he is the real deal. He even suggests how you can incorporate learning the guitar in your busy daily schedule and then asks for feedback on how to improve the training material.
“Old Dog Learning New Tricks”
55 year old Ed reckons that the L&MG course taught him more in 3 weeks than what he got trying to learn with an inexperienced teacher (I’d like to guess that he probably didn’t get his money back from that music school either). 56 year old Norm shares Ed’s experience, citing his less than favorable experiences with private lessons.
Going beyond G, A, E and D chords
Hmmm, I started with C, F, D and G chords myself, but the L&MG course helped Lester to finally go beyond the basics.
Suitable for children
Dan’s 9 year old Daughter is making excellent progress with the course. Dan himself is now able to read music notes and not just tablature.
Enjoying the fruits of his labor (from the current members section)
Ken H got to feel what it’s really like playing along with another guitarist friend, something he never thought he’d be able to do before purchasing the L&MG course. I really enjoy reading testimonials like these, as I know how great that feeling is.
Have a family and a full-time job and want to learn the guitar?
Here’s why the DVDs are a big improvement over traditional learning methods.
The course is suitable for intermediate players too
Craig London is no beginner but found that the course was effective at filling in the gaps in his knowledge. Glenn replied saying the course helped his sight reading, and allows him to practice his strumming and timing. Session 4 helped Tom practice reading notes, and he supplemented that with Hal Leonard’s Easy Pop Melodies.
Additional books, and advice from Steve
Steve recommends Hal Leonard’s Easy Pop Melodies for additional practice material – see a list of Hal’s guitar books at Amazon and also gives some motivation on how to tackle the difficult portions of the training material.
Want to purchase additional / replacement course material?
Maybe you want to buy an additional workbook for your binding needs. Well, another nice touch from the L&MG folks is that they give you the ability to purchase additional or replacement course material.
Eddie Van Halen technique?
Luis couldn’t find this technique that the main website claims the course teaches. Steve Krenz replied in great detail where to find the related topic (Tapping in Section 14) and also points out how to search the internet for more information. This is excellent post-purchase customer service in my opinion.
Not suitable for advanced players
In the third post of this thread, Piesore gives an honest opinion about how the course is not suitable for advanced or intermediate players who already have a firm grasp on the basics.
Conclusion
There is a lot more to read at the old archive, and don’t forget to read my full review of the Learn and Master Guitar with Steve Krenz course.
Hopefully, this information will help you make a better decision on whether to purchase the course.

Does LMG give teach major and minor scales and how to play them across the neck??
Anthony, I’ve just looked at my copy of LMG and yes, I believe it teaches what you ask.
